Sprinkler System Ensures Safety of Resident in Mechanicsville House Fire

2-story, single-family dwelling that was struck by lightning on 08/20/19.

On Tuesday, August 20, around 5:00 p.m., the Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department was called to 38975 Dixie Lyon Road in St. Mary's County for a 2-story, single-family dwelling fire reported by a passerby. Responding firefighters safely removed an occupant and his dog from the residence, which suffered approximately $100,000 in damages.

The State Fire Marshal's Southern Regional Office investigated shortly after and determined the fire to be caused by a lightning strike. While the financial loss was significant, the event resulted in no injuries or fatalities, in part, because of the functioning smoke alarms and sprinkler system.
